Fort Wayne firefighter’s brother dies while fighting fire in Ohio

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The younger brother of a Fort Wayne firefighter died while fighting a fire at an apartment complex near downtown Toledo, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Firefighters Stephen Machcinski, 42, and James Dickman, 31, were killed in the line of duty while fighting the fire in a six-unit building on Sunday.

Stephen Machcinski is the younger brother of Fort Wayne firefighter Richard Machcinski. FWFD officials said Richard went back to his hometown Monday to be with his family.

Fort Wayne Fire IAFF Local 124 is working to have a FWFD presence in Toledo during the funeral processions, according to FWFD spokesperson Stacey Fleming

Fleming released the following statement on Monday:

We ask that you keep Machcinski family, the Dickman family and the entire Toledo Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  Any further communication will be passed on by the Toledo Fire Department, Toledo Fire IAFF Local 92, or at the request of Machcinski family.
