109 Speedway stations cited for selling alcohol on Christmas

File Speedway Convenience Store sign

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WANE)  Indiana State Excise Police have cited 109 Speedway convenience stores across the state for selling alcoholic  beverages on Christmas of 2013.

An excise officer began the month-long investigation on December 26, 2013, when she received an anonymous tip that the Speedway

convenience store at 1706 South Bend Avenue in South Bend had sold beer on Christmas Day. While the officer was at that store, a clerk who worked at a different Speedway on Christmas Day asked the officer if it was illegal to sell alcoholic beverages on Christmas Day, because she had also sold alcohol at her store.

Indiana law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages from 7:00 a.m. on December 25 until 3:00 a.m. on December 26.

No Speedway stores in Fort Wayne were cited, however one store each in Wabash, Angola and Auburn were found to have sold alcohol on Christmas.

Eighteen of the stores were located in Indianapolis.

Excise police indicated that Speedway has been cooperative in the investigation.
