Police: Man stabs girlfriend after she tries to break up

ORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – NewsChannel 15 has learned more information about a weekend stabbing that left a woman in critical condition. Police said the woman’s boyfriend allegedly became angry and stabbed her after she tried to break up with him.

According to the affidavit for probable cause, 21-year-old Michael R. Johnson, Jr. went to his girlfriend’s home in the 2600-block of Fairfield View Place at around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Johnson’s girlfriend told police she tried to break up with Johnson. He then went downstairs and came back to her bedroom with a kitchen knife.

The victim’s 11-year-old son and her roommate told police they heard her screaming “he’s stabbing me” and yelling for help. The roommate said she went into the bedroom and tried to punch Johnson but he ran out of the house.

Police said Johnson stabbed the victim in the chest, back, ribs, arms, and hands. She was taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.

Officers found Johnson later that morning at his home and took him to the police station for questioning.

According to the probable cause, Johnson told police he didn’t know what the officer was talking about. When asked what happened to his girlfriend, Johnson replied “who is that?” Police said during the questioning, his hands, face, shoes, and jeans were covered with blood.

Police said Johnson faces the following charges:

  • Aggravated Battery, a class B felony
  • Battery Committed by Means of a Deadly Weapon or Resulting in SBI, a class C felony
  • Battery Committed by Means of a Deadly Weapon or Resulting in SBI, a class C felony
