Hidden History: Polly Strong

Slave Polly Strong fought to end her enslavement in Indiana and won a court case.

Vincennes, Ind. (WTWO) – Indiana became a state in 1816 and a ban on slavery was written into the state constitution. But at that time there was a general consensus that the ban only applied to new slaves, not those already living in the territory prior to statehood.

All that changed with a court case that began in Vincennes. It is part of Indiana’s Hidden History.
