BLUFFTON, Ind. (WANE) A Berne woman has died after she crashed into the Wabash River Tuesday.

According to police, Sherry L. Green, 53, lost control of her vehicle and crossed over the center line before driving down the embankment into the river.

A witness saw the incident and called 911, officials said.

Emergency responders were called to the crash at 6595 S.R. 116, along the Wabash River on the southern tip of the Ouabache State Park just before 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Crews arrived and were able to pull the vehicle – with Green still inside – from the river. Officials said the vehicle was in the water for nearly an hour.

Medics revived the woman on land before she was airlifted from the scene.

Green died at a hospital around 7:15 Tuesday night.

It’s not clear why her vehicle left the roadway, but conditions were snowy at the time.
