FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man was struck and killed by a vehicle as he made his way to a city bus stop early Thursday.
Police and medics were called around 6:30 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of Reed Road and Heatherwind Drive, near Lake Avenue at the entrance of Richfield Apartments, on a report of a pedestrian accident there. First responders arrived to find a man down and unresponsive in the middle of the roadway.
The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Doctors pronounced him dead. He was identified by the Allen County Coroner’s Office as 48-year-old Daniel Matthew Baliles of Fort Wayne.
Fort Wayne Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Joyner said the department’s FACT Team investigators believe Baliles was walking crossing the road to get to a Citilink bus stop when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. Joyner said Baliles walked into the vehicle’s path.
The driver of the vehicle was reportedly cooperative with investigators. It does not appear that alcohol or drugs will be a factor in the crash, Joyner said.
Police did not identify the driver.
Reed Road was closed to traffic while investigators worked the scene.
