Two people injured in fire at Lake George Retreat in Steuben County


FREMONT, Ind. (WANE) – A fire at the restaurant Lake George Retreat in Fremont broke out Friday morning and injured two people during the blaze, including a firefighter.

According to a press release from Fremont Fire Department, owner of the restaurant, Steven Rodenhouse contacted Steuben County 911 to report the fire inside of the building located at 35 Lane 130A on Lake George at 6:40 a.m. When the Fremont Fire Department arrived on the scene, smoke and flames were visible coming from the structure.

Due to the amount of fire and the extremely cold temperatures that firefighters encountered, 18 other fire departments, including ones from Indiana and Michigan were called to the scene to assist. Approximately five hours after the initial dispatch, at 11:30 a.m., the fire was placed under control, according to the press release.

Firefighters remained on the scene after extinguishing the fire to clean up and extinguish hot spots throughout the building.

Members of the community also assisted at the scene. A nearby McDonald’s and Clay’s Restaurant brought food and refreshments and the Fremont Community School District brought a school bus for firefighters to escape the cold.

During the incident, a firefighter and a woman were injured and transported from the scene to an area hospital for treatment. The conditions of those injured are not known at this time. Rodenhouse was treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation after trying put out the fire himself, a neighbor said.

The landmark restaurant has been located on Lake George since the early 1900’s and is has been a popular destination for local residents and tourists alike.

The restaurant was a complete total loss. The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
