FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A man was killed and another critically hurt in a shooting just northeast of downtown Fort Wayne late Tuesday.
Fort Wayne Police were called at 10 p.m. Tuesday to a parking lot near East State Boulevard and California Avenue. Department spokesman Officer John Chambers said one person was shot and killed, pronounced dead by paramedics in a parking lot behind the East State Bar and Grill.
Two other people were taken by a private vehicle to a nearby hospital. Chambers said one man was in critical condition with a gunshot wound. The other suffered a sprained ankle after running from the scene.
Just after noon Wednesday, the Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 22-year-old Codi Allen McCann of Fort Wayne. McCann died of gunshot wounds and his death was ruled the county’s 47th homicide of 2016.
The two hospitalized people have not been identified. It’s also unclear if both are victims or if one (or both) is a possible suspect. Chambers said investigators were still trying to piece together information.
Chambers said there was some type of disturbance or altercation in the parking lot that led to the shooting. He said investigators are trying to figure out if anyone else was involved. Detectives were talking with potential witnesses in the area and checking with people inside the bar if they saw or heard anything. One resident who lives in a nearby apartment told NewsChannel 15 he heard around five gunshots.
It’s unknown if the people involved in the shooting were at the bar or just in the area. It’s also unknown if they lived in the neighborhood.
Several surveillance cameras attached to the bar and a nearby gas station were located in or near the alley. It’s unclear if they captured any footage of what happened in the parking lot.
Chambers said police have yet to develop any possible suspect information.
Police have not released any names.
The incident is under investigation.
