Man found shot at gas station dies

Police tape surrounds a vehicle and gas pumps after a reported shooting at the Marathon at Clinton and Lafayette on Nov. 30, 2016.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man died after being shot, according to Fort Wayne police.

Officers were called to the Marathon gas station at Lafayette Avenue and South Clinton Street around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday for a reported shooting.

FWPD Spokesman Officer Jason Anthony said a 911 caller said a man was in the road who appeared to be shot. When officers arrived at the gas station they found the victim on the ground at the front door to the store, according to Anthony.

The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but he later died. A exact cause and manner of death and the name of the victim will be released by the Allen County Coroner later.

Police found the man’s vehicle parked near a gas pump and discovered a bullet hole in a small window on the driver’s side.

However, Anthony said investigators do not know if the shooting happened at the gas station or if perhaps the man was shot nearby and drove to the gas station to get help.

Crime scene technicians photographed and collected any possible evidence at the gas station. FWPD detectives were looking at store surveillance to try and see if anything happened in the parking lot and if another person was in the area of the shooting. Detectives also looked for potential witnesses at nearby homes and businesses.

Crime scene tape surrounded the victim’s vehicle and several gas pumps.

Police do not have any suspect information. The incident is under investigation.
