FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE-TV) A man found dead after being shot in a car on Fort Wayne’s southeast side Monday night has been identified. An autopsy performed by the Allen County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Romeo Kamale Cansler, 20, of Fort Wayne died from a gunshot wound. His death is the 45th homicide in Allen County in 2016, tying the record for homicides set in 2013.

According to police at the scene, officers were called to Holgate Drive, near Hessen Cassel and E. Paulding Roads just before 10 p.m. after someone heard a loud noise outside of an apartment building.

When they got to the scene, officers found a car in a field at the north-end of Holgate. Cansler, who appeared to have been shot in the head, was inside. He was taken from the scene in critical condition, but was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police told NewsChannel 15 that they believe the incident started behind an apartment building on Holgate and Cansler hit the gas pedal before the car came to a stop in the field.

Officers talked to neighbors and collected evidence, however they did not have any information about a suspect or motive behind the incident.
