BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 5/6 Indiana University men’s basketball team defeated the Liberty Flames, 87-48, on Saturday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 3-0 on the season overall, while the Flames move to 1-2 on the year. Indiana has now started a perfect 3-0 on the year for the seventh-straight season.
James Blackmon Jr. led the way for Indiana with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while totaling nine rebounds and three assists. OG Anunoby recorded his first career double-double, tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with two blocks, while Robert Johnson added 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor with three steals.
For the game, Indiana shot 61 percent (28-of-46), including 43 percent (9-of-21) from behind the arc. The Hoosiers dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Flames, 55-20. Indiana’s 46 defensive rebounds are the most in a game since the 1996-97 season.
Defensively, IU limited Liberty to 30 percent (19-of-64) shooting, including just 19 percent (5-of-27) from 3-point territory.
The Hoosier thoroughly controlled the first half, running out to a 15-2 lead at the 12:53 mark. Indiana extended the lead to 32 points, 39-7, with just over five minutes left in the first half. At the break, IU led Liberty, 45-19.
Offensively, Blackmon. Jr. led the Hoosiers with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Anunoby had seven points and nine boards in the first half, while Johnson chipped in 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
In the first half, Indiana shot 64 percent (16-of-25) from the floor as a team, including 55 percent (6-of-11) from beyond the arc.
As impressive as the Hoosiers were offensively in the first half, they were even more on the defensive end, forcing Liberty to shoot just 21 percent (7-of-33) from the floor and just six percent (1-of-17) from 3-point territory. IU also out-rebounded the Flames, 32-7, in the first stanza.
In the second half, Liberty would get no closer than 26 points, as Indiana controlled the game, winning, 87-48.
For the Hoosier, Juwan Morgan had seven points and eight rebounds, while Thomas Bryant added nine points and three boards. De’Ron Davis had six points and four rebounds off the bench, while Grant Gelon had five points for IU.
The No. 5/6 Indiana Hoosiers will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when the team heads north to face Fort Wayne. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET.
