WESTFIELD, Ind. (WANE) – Snider’s quest for back-to-back state championship fell short at 5A semi-state on Friday night as the 5A no. 1 Panthers fell to 5A no. 5 Westfield 23-17 in a game delayed by weather.
After a 40-minute delay to start the game Snider struck first on Friday as Paul Buisman booted a 24-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead with 7:47 left on the clock in the first quarter. Christian Covington would add to that lead with a 3-yard touchdown as Snider led 10-0 after the first 12 minutes.
Westfield’s Will Harrison would nail a 39-yard field goal with 2:39 to go before half, cutting Snider’s lead to 10-3. With 42 seconds remaining in the second quarter Westfield quarterback Andrew Sweet hit Evan Manley for a 25-yard strike, knotting the game at 10 heading into the half.
Nate Froelich would give Westfield its first lead of the game with a 3-yard touchdown run at 8:36 in the third quarter. Snider would respond 30 seconds later as Mac Hippenhammer took a reverse 64 yards for a score, tying the game at 17.
A Snider fumble would lead to a Harrison 53-yard field goal at 3:22 in the third quarter, putting Westfield on top 20-17. Harrison would hit from 24 yards out with 13 seconds left in the third to make it 23-17 and set the final.
Snider quarterback Michael Haupert rushed 18 times for 120 yards to pace the Panthers while Covington added 13 carries for 77 yards and a score.
Snider ends the season with a 12-1 record.
