Crews extinguish fire at Wells Street business

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Firefighters responded to a fire at the Wells Street Variety Store located at the corner of Wells Street and Archer Avenue at around 7:30 a.m. Friday.

According to a news release from the Fort Wayne Fire Department, smoke and flames could be seen from the roof of the building when crews arrived on the scene.

The fire was found to be above the ceiling on the second floor above the store and it had spread to the attic area and through the roof.  Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly.  They have not yet determined a cause and no one was injured in the incident.

A firefighter on the scene told NewsChannel 15 there were two people in an upstairs apartment who managed to get out safely.

The fire disrupted traffic in the area for a time.
