FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Walgreens stores will again offer flu shots at no charge in an effort to protect customers against influenza.
All 26 Walgreens stores in the area will offer flu shots at no charge on Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Customers need only visit the store to receive the shots, the pharmacy said.
“The flu shot is the best protection you can get against influenza,” said Walgreens spokesman Randy Jennings. “The one thing we know about flu season is that it’s always unpredictable – we never know when it may peak or how severe it may be.”
This is the sixth year Walgreens has offered no-charge flu shots. Jennings said the pharmacy has distributed more than $50 million in flu shots to uninsured or underinsured people throughout the U.S. This year, Jennings said Walgreens hopes to distribute more than $10 million worth of flu shot vouchers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a flu shot for everyone over the 6 months old by October, or as soon as vaccine becomes available. Jennings said residents should get the shot sooner rather than later because it takes up to two weeks to build up full immunity following a shot.
