Railroaders prepare to host 3A semi-state game

GARRETT, Ind. (WANE) – The Garrett Railroaders are a win away from heading to Lucas Oil Stadium to play for the 3A state title with only the Concordia Cadets standing in the way.

3A no. 17 Garrett (12-1) will host 3A no. 7 Concordia (11-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field.

The Railroaders are coming off a 31-28 win at 3A no. 2 Mishawaka Marian where kicker Kiann McDonald nailed a 30-yard field goal with 1.6 seconds left to earn the win. Garrett quarterback Tanner Burns hit receiver Ben Purdy for four touchdowns in that game. Purdy has 63 grabs for 1,138 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns this season while Burns has throw for 1,909 yards, completing 62-percent of his passes. Burns has 16 touchdown passes to just two interceptions and has also run in 10 TDs. Running back Cam Smith has tallied 1,807 yards on the ground this year to go with 23 touchdowns.

Concordia is coming off a 62-27 whipping of 3A no. 4 West Lafayette last Friday at Zollner Stadium. The Cadets are looking for their first-ever trip to state while Garrett won the 1A state title back in 1974.
