FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Head coach Niecee Nelson picked up her first career win as the Fort Wayne women’s basketball team defeated Defiance 76-58 Saturday night (Nov. 12) inside the Gates Sports Center.
Lindley Kistler led the Mastodons with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including three from downtown. De’Jour Young finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three assist for the ‘Dons. KeShyra McCarver led the way with eight rebounds to go along with eight points and a game-high three steals. Anna Lappenküper and Rachel Rinehart paced Fort Wayne with five assists each.
After Defiance scored the opening bucket of the game, the ‘Dons responded by out-scoring the Yellow Jackets 11-3 in a 4:16 span to take the lead. The Mastodon offense and defense played well in the half, as they only surrendered back-to-back baskets by Defiance once. Fort Wayne limited the Yellow Jackets to four points in the final 4:33 of the second quarter, all free throws, as they led 35-23 at the half.
The two sides exchanged seven-point runs to begin the third quarter, but the ‘Dons ended the run thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Young and McCarver to lead 52-33 with 3:52 to play in the period. The Mastodons did not allow Defiance to get back into the game in the fourth quarter, matching its offense nearly shot for shot.
For the game, the ‘Dons connected on 30-of-65 (46.2%) from the floor while knocking down 6-of-10 (60%) from three-point range and 10-of-17 (58.8%) at the charity stripe.
Fort Wayne closes out its busy opening weekend when it hosts Trine on Monday (Nov. 14) for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
