FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne women’s basketball team hosted its annual Fitness Day game in front of over 500 elementary school kids, but the Mastodons were unable to take down defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion Belmont, falling 85-59.
The ‘Dons were led by KeShyra McCarver and Selena Lozada with 12 points apiece. Lozada and De’Jour Young tied for the team lead with six rebounds each, while Young added 10 points. Anna Lappenküper dished out a game-high five assists to lead Fort Wayne.
After Belmont scored the opening basket of the game, Isis Parker knocked down a free throw at the 8:33 mark to score Fort Wayne’s first point of the season. The Bruins used a 10-0 run midway through the opening quarter as the ‘Dons trailed 16-5 after the first period. The two teams traded buckets through most of the second quarter, but it was Belmont with another 10-0 run at the end of the second, as the Mastodons trailed 37-20 at the half.
Young opened the second half scoring for Fort Wayne with a layup, but the Bruins responded with an 11-0 run, then a 7-0 run to close out the quarter and put the game out of reach. The ‘Dons closed out the game strong by shooting 50 percent (8-16) from the floor in the fourth quarter.
On the day, the Mastodons connected on 24-of-66 (36.4%) from the floor, 4-of-10 (40%) beyond the arc, and 7-of-11 (63.6%) at the free throw line.
Fort Wayne goes right back to work when it hosts Defiance tomorrow, November 12, for a 6 p.m. game.
