Area schools honor and celebrate veterans

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) honored veterans with activities and events at every school in the district Friday. Schools performed patriotic music and participated in assemblies with local veterans groups.

In support of veteran’s day, FWCS’ Brentwood Elementary hosted an assembly where students participated in a flag ceremony with the 122nd Fighter Wing Honor Guard.The staff of Forest Park Elementary raised $262 for the VA hospital by paying to wear jeans to school. Lincoln Elementary students received a visit from Army National Guard who brought several pieces of large equipment to the school, according to a press release from FWCS.

Lakeside Middle School students invited the Fort Wayne Police Department Honor Guard and Pipe and Drum Brigade. Memorial Park Middle School students participated in the “Komets Kare Package” by writing thank-you letters to veterans. Northrop High School students kicked off a fundraiser for Puppies Behind Bars, an organization that trains service dogs for disabled veterans, according to the press release.
