Police nab suspected light pole wire thief

BURNS HARBOR, Ind. (WANE) Police arrested a man Monday after he was seen cutting wire from light poles near I-94 in northwest Indiana as the result of an investigation that began in August.

According to Indiana State Police, a detective with the department was able to identify a suspect based on tips and other information. On Monday at around 2:30 in the morning, the detective watched the suspect from a park in Burns Harbor. The suspect parked his pickup truck near a ramp to I-94 and was seen cutting through a fence before he walked up to some light poles and cut wires which he then took back to his truck. The suspect then drove his truck onto the ramp and loaded more wire into his truck.

The suspect, identified as James H. Higgason III, 47, of Gary, was arrested and taken to the Porter County Jail where he was charged with felony theft.

Motorists are asked to call police if they see someone who appears to be working on light poles late at night or early in the morning.
