WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore Cameron Glenn and redshirt freshman Jessie Bates III were named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Back and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their performance in Wake Forest’s 27-20 victory over Virginia on Nov. 5.
Glenn, a 6-1, 200-pound redshirt sophomore safety from Stone Mountain, Ga. (Stephenson) had four tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception that set up a score. With Virginia trying to convert a 4th-and-1 from the Wake Forest 38 in the second quarter, Glenn recovered a fumble and the Deacons were able to convert it into a touchdown just before the half. In the fourth quarter with Wake Forest trailing 20-17, Glenn intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards to the Virginia 11, setting up a 36-yard field goal to tie the game.
Bates, a 6-2, 200-pound redshirt freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Snider), had four tackles (3 solos), an interception, a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry in the win over the Cavaliers. Bates delivered the key play, intercepting a pass and returning it 39 yards for the winning touchdown with 6:47 to play in the game. Just minutes earlier, Bates had broken up a pass that was intercepted by Cam Glenn and returned to the Virginia 11 that set up the game-tying field goal.
Wake Forest improved to 6-3 (3-2 ACC) with the victory and became bowl eligible for the first time since 2011 with Saturday’s win. The Deacs hit the road this weekend, traveling to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Cardinals. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
