Fort Wayne Mayor Henry recovering from quadruple heart bypass surgery

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Mayor Tom Henry (D-Fort Wayne) underwent heart bypass surgery Monday, according to a statement by city spokesman John Perlich.

Perlich released a statement in the afternoon:

Mayor Tom Henry today underwent successful heart bypass surgery. He is resting comfortably and anticipates returning to regular work activities in the next week to 10 days.

According to Cindy Henry, Mayor Henry’s wife, he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery. According to Elizabeth Henry, Mayor Henry’s daughter, he had minor chest pains on Friday, and his doctors found significant blockage in his chest. The surgery was scheduled for Monday.

Monday afternoon, Elizabeth told NewsChannel 15 Mayor Henry was awake and talking with his family.

Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer is handling the city’s day-to-day operations, according to Perlich. Various department heads in multiple city offices are also helping.

Perlich assured city residents Fort Wayne’s government is operating normally.
