Police were called just before 7:30 p.m. to the railroad crossing near the intersection of State Roads 25 and 19. There, crews found a completely demolished pickup truck just off the tracks.

A preliminary investigation showed the man tried to turn southbound onto State Road 19 (Franklin Street) from State Road 25 (Main Street) when his pickup truck went off the paved portion of the crossing and became stuck on the rails. It was then hit by an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train.

The coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene. He was identified early Thursday as 40-year-old Joseph A. Kimmel of Akron. Kosciusko County Deputy Coroner Michael Wilson said Kimmel died of blunt force trauma.
