WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Isaac Haas scored 25 points and No. 15-ranked Purdue forced 22 turnovers to breeze past Southern Indiana 85-63 at Mackey Arena on Tuesday night.
Purdue improved to 22-0 under head coach Matt Painter in exhibition games and is now 62-7 all-time in exhibition contests.
After falling behind 4-0 early on, Purdue embarked on efficient 12-0 and 42-14 runs to take a 42-18 lead with 3:30 to play in the first half on a Grady Eifert layup. The Boilermakers led 47-31 at halftime after shooting 59.4 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
USI did open the second half on a run, cutting the lead to 10 points two different times in the second half, the last coming at 52-42 with 15:13 to play. But Spike Albrecht and Isaac Haas combined to score Purdue’s next 15 points as Purdue slowly built on the lead en route to an 85-63 decision.
The Boilermakers went 33-of-56 (.589) from the field, 5-of-20 (.250) from 3-point range and just 14-of-28 (.500) from the free throw line. Purdue had a whopping 28 assists on its 33 made field goals and committed 14 turnovers. The Boilermakers were outrebounded by a 37-34 margin.
Southern Indiana was 24-of-56 (.429) from the field and 5-of-16 (.313) from 3-point range. The Screaming Eagles had 22 turnovers.
Purdue outscored Southern Indiana 52-22 in the paint.
Haas scored his 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting and added four rebounds and two blocks. Caleb Swanigan flirted with a triple-double with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Albrecht tallied 13 points (4-of-5 FGs, 3-of-4 3Ps) and four assists and Vincent Edwards scored 11 points with seven rebounds and four assists.
Purdue will officially open the 2016-17 season on Friday, Nov. 11, when McNeese State visits Mackey Arena.
