Coroner’s office identifies woman found dead in burning apartment

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A woman found dead inside a burning apartment just northeast of downtown Fort Wayne early Monday has been identified following an autopsy conducted by the Allen County Coroner’s Office. However the cause and manner of death for Joyce A. Shebish, 54, of Fort Wayne has not yet been determined.

Firefighters were called around 9:20 a.m. Monday to an apartment building at 915 Tennessee Ave. on a report of a fire. There, crews found a fire in one of the apartments.

Officials told NewsChannel 15 that a person arrived at the apartment to pick Shebish up for an appointment. The person said Shebish did not answer the door, then smelled smoke, so the person called police.

Shebish was found dead in the apartment a short time later by firefighters.

A person in another apartment escaped without injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
