Coroner’s office releases ID of Weisser Park shooting victim

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Allen County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of a man found shot to death Wednesday evening at the Weisser Park pavilion. An autopsy on the body of Devonte Lamont Jones, 22, of Fort Wayne determined he died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death has been ruled a homicide, the 44th for Allen County in 2016.

Officers were called to the 800 block of Eckart Street on Fort Wayne’s southeast side around 6:45 p.m after a report of gunshots in the area.

FWPD Spokesman Officer Chris Felton said officers searched the area, but did not locate anything. A few minutes later a witness told police a man was injured in the area of the pavilion.

Felton said officers found an unconscious individual and started CPR. A short time later, Jones was pronounced dead.

As of Wednesday night, police have not found any witnesses to the shooting and have not been able to gather any information about what happened or who was involved.

Detectives are currently searching for potential witnesses and attempting to gather possible evidence.

About and hour after the shooting, police were called to the Rodeway Inn on Goshen Road for a reported shooting. Investigators have not said if the two shootings are connected.
