Ceremony honors firefighters killed in the line of duty

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department held it’s 15th annual Firefighters Memorial Ceremony at the Law Enforcement/Firefighter’s Memorial Saturday.

The event aims to pay tribute to those firefighters from Fort Wayne and Allen County that have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and acknowledge the sacrifice that the families who have been left behind have made as well. The event includes a “Rose Ceremony,” which calls each of the names of firefighters who have died and places a rose on a table that also bears their helmet and name.

Community activist Linda Vandeveer and her husband Jerry donated the funds for the memorial. Linda passed away in late September after battling stage 4 liver cancer for nearly 7 months.

Captain of the Fort Wayne Fire Department Casey Cassidy said the FWFD is fortunate to have a wonderful site. For the families that do attend, he said, it’s hard for them but they are very thankful for the site and for the opportunity to remember their loved ones.
