PAULDING COUNTY, Oh. (WANE) – The Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single vehicle, semi crash that caused the vehicle to overturn and left the driver trapped inside Thursday.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. a 2007 Freightliner semi was traveling east bound on State Route 613 one mile east of the Indiana/Ohio state line.The driver drifted off the right side of the roadway causing the semi and tanker trailer he was pulling to overturn into a deep ditch. At this point, the driver was trapped inside the semi cab for over an hour.
Ater Payne Volunteer Fire and EMS personnel extricated the driver from the vehicle he was transported by Mercy Health and Life Flight helicopter, to a Toledo hospital.
The semi tanker contained liquid fertilizer and a small amount had leaked during the vehicle recovery. Crews worked to mitigate any further spills and to safely remove the semi and tanker trailer from the roadside.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of crash. Alcohol was not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
The Van Wert Post was assisted by the Pauling County Sheriff’s office, Payne Fire and EMS, Van Wert County EMA, Mercy Health Life Flight, Robinson’s Towing, and Gordon Enterprises.
The incident remains under investigation.
