Worker killed after SUV careens into construction area

HOBART, Ind. (WANE) A worker cutting a concrete joint was killed on I-65 in northwest, Indiana Wednesday morning when an SUV struck him after changing lanes in a construction area.

The incident took place in Lake County just after 9:30 a.m. according to Indiana State Police.

The driver of the SUV was headed north when she changed lanes behind a semi and hit a construction barrel separating the driving lanes from the work zone. After striking the barrel, the SUV continued into the work zone where it struck Dewayne Fiscus, 35, of LaPorte. Fiscus hit the windshield of the before landing on the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

All northbound lanes were closed for several hours.

Indiana State Police did not indicate if the driver faces any charges.
