FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Girls basketball practice gets underway next Monday and there’s plenty to look forward to about the 2016-17 season if media day at North Side is any indication.
One of the teams to watch this season will be the Homestead Spartans. Miss Basketball candidate Karissa McLaughlin leads a talented squad that went 26-3 last season. Starters Lindley Kistler (who signed with IPFW) and Savannah Buck (St. Francis) have graduated, but both Madisen Parker (committed to Bowling Green) and Jazmyne Geist (Northern Kentucky) return for their senior season.
Carroll will be one of the schools looking to challenge the Spartans in the SAC. Kelli Damman and Becca Villanueva return off a team that won 13 games. Dwenger won 14 games last year and must replace all-SAC selection Taya Andrews, but junior Ellen Ross will be counted on after averaging 11 points and 8 rebounds as a sophomore.
Concordia will also be a strong contender in the SAC coming off a 14-win campaign during the 2015-16 season. All-SAC pick Shania Kelly returns after averaging 16.1 points and 10 rebounds a game last year as a junior. Solare Starks (10.3 ppg.) and Carissa Garcia (10.5 ppg.) both return after excelling during their freshman season.
In the Northeast 8 East Noble will look to build off an 18-win season that saw the Knights earn a sectional title. Leo, who went 15-8 last year, and Norwell (23-3) will also be in the title hunt.
