Former American Senior Communities CEO arrested

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The former CEO for American Senior Communities, James Burkhart, was arrested early Wednesday morning.

Burkhart’s attorney, Larry Mackey, confirmed the arrest to WISH-TV in Indianapolis. Federal prosecutors said Burkhart, along with three other men, used shell companies to falsify and inflate American Senior Communities costs, then steal discounts and rebates for their vendors and themselves.

Burkhart has been charged with wire, mail fraud and money laundering charges. He will appear before a judge on Wednesday, according to his attorney.

In September 2015, Burkart’s upscale Carmel home was part of an FBI raid that included the ASC’s cooperate headquarters.

Agents were seen going in and out of the home, taking items from the FBI truck parked out front and bringing them inside. Authorities were at the home for nine hours. Before they left, agents packed bags, boxes and several computers.

Burkhart was fired days after the raids.

American Senior Communities operates some 70 nursing home facilities across Indiana, including 10 in Fort Wayne.
