Man crashes into tree; vehicle catches on fire

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A man crashed his vehicle into a tree causing it to catch on fire Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 12:50 p.m., Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area fo CR 200 N west of CR 950 E. Deputies arrived and found the driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old man laying outside the the vehicle with possible internal and head injuries.

The man was flown in a helicopter to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment.

According to a press release from Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the man was driving eastbound on CR 200 N and lost control of his 1991 Chevrolet truck on a hill causing him to drive off the south side of the roadway where he struck a large tree. He was able to exit before the truck caught on fire. Speed was believed to be a factor in the accident, but the man was wearing his seatbelt.
