ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – One person was hurt after a car collided with a stray horse north of Fort Wayne early Wednesday morning.
The crash was reported in the 10000 block of Schwartz Road around 1:15 a.m.
Investigators said a car was headed south on Schwartz near Notestine Road when it struck the horse.
A passenger in the car was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The woman was upgraded to serious condition by hospital staff. The driver of the car stopped about 100 yards after the impact and ran to a nearby house for help. The driver did not have major injuries.
The horse died as a result of the impact.
The car suffered severe damage, including a large dent in the hood from the horse. Most of the roof of the car had been sheered back.
Allen County Sheriff’s deputies worked overnight to determine where the horse broke loose from.
Schwartz Road was closed between Eby Road and Notestine Road for about two hours while police investigated and cleaned up the crash.
The incident is under investigation.
