Vehicle strikes and kills man changing flat tire on side of the road

LOWELL, Ind. (WANE) – A vehicle struck and killed a man changing a flat tire on I-65 in Lowell at 1:14 a.m. Monday morning.

A preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that a man was changing a flat tire on the driver’s side of his 2000 Oldsmobile Alero, which was parked on the right shoulder with its emergency hazards flashing. For unknown reasons, 58-year-old Atanas Popov was driving over a 2012 Ford Focus, when they drifted over the fog line, sideswiped the Alero and struck the man kneeling down changing the flat tire.

Upon arrival at the scene, State Troopers spoke to a woman that was walking away from the scene. It was later determined that she was the passenger in the Alero at the time of the crash. She was uninjured, but uncooperative as Troopers initially believed she may have been the driver of the Alero. Further questioning revealed she was looking for the driver of the Alero that was changing the tire but could not find him.

Troopers found the driver identified as 55-year-old Gregory Davis of Gary, dead, approximately 150 feet from the vehicle.
