Girl, 2, dies after crash with semi

BLACKFORD COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A 2-year-old injured in a crash with a semi in late August has died.

Blackford County Sheriff Jeff Sones said early Thursday that young Nevaeh Hayworth died from injuries suffered in an Aug. 31 crash along S.R. 18 just east of C.R. 100 East.

Police and medics were called just after 2:30 that afternoon to the roadway on a report of a vehicle and semi crash. There, police found a silver 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser rested in the westbound lane, and a white 1991 Marmon semi tractor with grain trailer jack-knifed across the roadway.

Investigators said the PT Cruiser, driven by 24-year-old Jestine Hayworth of Hartford City, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of S.R. 18 just before the crash. Police said a witness who was traveling behind the PT Cruiser had honked in an attempt to warn Hayworth just before the crash.

The driver of the semi, 73-year-old Buddy Hayes of Huntington, tried to avoid the crash but collided nearly head-on with the car in the westbound lane.

Hayworth was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital in stable condition. Nevaeh, who was in a car seat behind the driver’s seat, was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital. The sheriff said he was notified of the girl’s death on Wednesday.

Hayes was not injured.
