LaGrange deputy uses Heimlich to help choking student

LaGrange, Ind. (WANE) A Lakeland Middle School student was able to return to class Wednesday morning after he was given the Heimlich maneuver after choking on some food.

Seventh grader Caleb Eash was eating breakfast during a program to honor police officers for peacekeeping efforts as part of a recognition of the International Day of Peace when he began to choke and have difficulty breathing.

Corporal Cliff Hibbs of the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department noticed Caleb’s difficulties as the boy walked away from his table to get help. Corporal Hibbs administered the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the food.

After being checked out by the school nurse, Caleb was able to return to class.
