FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The TinCaps allowed two runs in both the ninth and 10th innings, but they conjured up some Parkview Field magic to stun the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers), 5-4, on Thursday night.
Chris Baker cleared the bases with a walk-off double down the right-field line, bringing home Jose Carlos Ureña, Peter Van Gansen and Kodie Tidwell for the thrilling victory.
Fort Wayne (26-40 second half, 62-74 overall) held a 2-0 lead heading into the ninth thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Carlos Belen and stellar pitching.
TinCaps starter Eric Lauer, the 25th overall selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, pitched a pair of scoreless frames for Fort Wayne in his team debut.
J.C. Cosme took over for Lauer and spun five scoreless frames. He allowed just three hits while striking out six.
Blake Rogers replaced Cosme and threw a shutout eighth inning but surrendered two runs to Great Lakes (32-33, 61-74) in the ninth. Elvin Liriano (W, 2-2) ceded two runs during the 10th.
In the home half, Urena drew a walk before Taylor Kohlwey struck out. Van Gansen singled and Tidwell walked, setting the stage for Baker’s heroics – Fort Wayne’s eighth walk-off win of the season.
Loons reliever Tony Gonsolin pitched the final 1.1 innings, dropping to 0-2 on the year.
Joey Lucchesi, a fourth-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2016, will make his TinCaps debut during the team’s regular-season home finale Friday night at Parkview Field.
