TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — A foundation honoring the legacy of war-reporting legend Ernie Pyle is working to establish a national holiday in remembrance of the Dana native.
The Tribune Star reports that the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation, which is made up of Pyle’s descendants, is planning a celebration at the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial in Albuquerque on Aug. 3, 2017, the 117th anniversary of Pyle’s birth.
Pyle’s birthday is a holiday in New Mexico, where he lived before heading out to the trenches in World War II.
Foundation board member Jerry Maschino says that after the celebration, the nonprofit will lobby lawmakers for a proclamation declaring the holiday nationwide.
Friends of Ernie Pyle board president Cynthia Myers says members will discuss ways to help the foundation spread the word. The nonprofit organization runs the Ernie Pyle World War II Museum in Dana.
