Strikers 16U soccer team set to play for National Championship

TULSA, Okla. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Sport Club 16U Strikers girl’s soccer team will play for a national championship Sunday.

The team is competing in the U.S. Youth Soccer 2016 National Presidents Cup.

The Strikers lost a pool play match to California Elite, 1-0 Saturday. But the loss didn’t hurt their position in the standings.

Finishing pool play 1-1-1 and with four points, they’ll have a rematch against California Elite Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

The 16U Strikers qualified for the the national tournament earlier this summer. Thursday, they tied Marlton Lightning (NJ) 2-2. Friday they defeated Greeneville Galaxy Select (TN), 3-1. Despite Saturday’s loss, four points was one point better than third place and good enough to get into the title match.

California Elite enters Sunday’s match 3-0 in pool play.

Karmen Koch of the Strikers has scored 3 goals in the tournament.
