Crowds, creativity turn out for TRF Raft Race

The Three Rivers Festival Raft Race was held Saturday, July 16, 2016 along the St. Marys River in downtown Fort Wayne.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Raft Race returned to the Three Rivers Festival after a year off with the same creativity and gumption that has made it a fan favorite.

After high waters on the St. Marys River forced officials to call off the event last year, hundreds turned out to the banks of the river Saturday for the return of the race and to cheer on the participants.

Those participants paddled down the river in rafts finely decorated. One group raced in the form of Super Mario Bros. Mario Kart. Another had a live drummer on board. A tank was also among the rafts.

Sport Wayne also strung a zip line across the river at the Wells Street Bridge and offered the willing a fun ride from bank to bank. Live bands entertained on the riverbank near Fort Wayne Outfitters.

The 8-day Three Rivers Festival closes Saturday night with a fireworks display in downtown Fort Wayne.

Hanning & Bean Enterprises, Inc. and Ruoff Home Mortgage sponsored the event.
