FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – TinCaps pitcher and Padres prospect Austin Smith hit the WANE-TV airwaves on Wednesday with a live interview during the 6 p.m. news.
According to MLB.com, Smith is the no. 6 overall prospect in the Padres system and the top pitching prospect on the TinCaps roster.
After a tough start to the season the 20-year old has dazzled over the last few weeks. In his last four starts Smith has given up a total of just three runs.
For the year he has a 2-5 record with a 4.66 ERA. Smith has fanned 40 batters in 67.2 innings.
Smith was selected in the second round out of high school in Florida by the Padres in last summer’s draft. The Padres did not have a first round selection, meaning Smith was the first player the organization drafted in 2015.
Smith, along with fellow TinCaps Logan Allen (MLB.com’s no. 7 Padres prospect) and Jacob Nix (no. 8), form a young but talented trio of arms that have San Diego fans excited for the future as they learn the ropes this summer at Parkview Field.
