EUGENE, Oregon (WANE) – Leo native and former Indiana University graduate Andy Bayer just missed a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team bound for Rio as Bayer finished fourth in the 3000M steeplechase final Friday night at the Olympic Trials in Eugene.
The top three finishers advance to the Olympics.
Bayer held the third spot for a good chunk of the final lap, but was ultimately passed by Donn Cabral who finished with a time of 4:26.37 to Bayer’s 4:28.59.
Evan Jager won the race at 4:22.48 with Hilary Bor second at 8:24.10.
Meanwhile, Huntington native Lauren Johnson punched her ticket to the 1500M finals with a strong effort in heat two of the semis.
Johnson ran 4:12.64 to finish fifth in her heat.
She advances to the 1500M final at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
