Man shot to death inside vehicle identified

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man killed after being shot while inside a vehicle has been identified. Following an autopsy, the Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Edword L. Kiel, 28, of Fort Wayne.  His death has been ruled a homicide.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers were called to the 3400 block of McKinnie Avenue around 1:30 a.m. initially for a vehicle crash.

Once officers arrived, they discovered Kiel, who appeared to have been shot, according to FWPD Spokesman Officer John Chambers.

Chambers said an initial investigation determined the victim and a woman were sitting inside a vehicle in the 3500 block of McKinnie.

Chambers said a person approached the vehicle and began shooting at the driver, later identified as Kiel. Once the driver was struck he put the vehicle in gear and drove about a block before crashing into a row of bushes and a tree.

The woman was not hit by any bullets, but Chambers said she sustained minor injuries in the crash. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Paramedics pronounced the Kiel dead at the crash.

Chambers said investigators hope to gather crucial information from the woman.

Currently, there is no suspect information and police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

Crime scene technicians photographed and collected evidence along McKinnie Ave. At least six shell casings were found in the street near where the car was parked.

Police have not said if they found any weapons.

The incident is under investigation.
