Captains rally in ninth to walk-off on TinCaps

EASTLAKE, Ohio – The TinCaps squandered a 2-1 ninth-inning lead in a 3-2 loss to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) on Friday night at Classic Park.

Ordomar Valdez led off the home ninth with a single against Fort Wayne closer Gerardo Reyes (L, 3-2). After that, Angel Miguel put down a bunt that Reyes fielded and threw wildly into center field, allowing Valdez to reach third base. Nathan Lucas followed with an RBI single to tie the game, 2-2. The cleanup batter, Connor Marabell, put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, respectively. Reyes intentionally walked David Armendariz to face Jose Medina. The left-handed batter hit a ground ball to first base that Brad Zunica fielded and threw home, but catcher Austin Allen was unable to handle the low throw, enabling Miguel to score the game-winning run.

The TinCaps (4-5, 40-39) led 2-1 because of a Zunica two-run homer in the seventh. The 20-year-old launched his team-leading ninth home run of the season over the wall in right to bring in third baseman Carlos Belen, who had singled.

The Captains (4-5, 44-35) originally led 1-0 on the strength of a third-inning homer from Yonathan Mendoza, their number nine hitter.

Fort Wayne starter Jacob Nix worked five one-run innings as he matched his career high for strikeouts with six. Lefty Nathan Foriest impressed with three scoreless innings, fanning five, in relief of Nix.

Christian Meister (W, 1-0) spun a scoreless ninth for Lake County.
