FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The University of Saint Francis will open its 19th season as the No. 3 team in the 2016 Sporting News College Football preview NAIA Report Top 10.

This is USF’s first SNCF mention since 2013 when the Cougars were ranked No. 7.
USF junior quarterback Nick Ferrer was named to the SNCF Pre-season NAIA All-American Team. Ferrer was Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2015.
USF is one of three Mid-States Football Association teams in the top 10. Defending NAIA Football Championship Series winner Marian University (Indianapolis) is No. 1 and St. Xavier University (Chicago, IL) is No. 6.
USF, which finished 11-1 in 2015 and won its 12th MSFA MEL title, was No. 4 in the NAIA Football Coaches Spring Top 25.
The Cougars return 19 starters (7 offense, 8 defense, 3 special teams), open practice for their 19th season on Aug. 7 in preparation for their season-opening game at Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL, on Aug. 27. The Cougars and their head coach Kevin Donley, the winningest coach in NAIA history with a 289-128-1 record in 37 seasons, open the home portion of the 2016 season on Sat., Sept. 10 against Taylor University at noon.
SNCF picks MU and Southern Oregon to play for the 2016 title for the third consecutive year. MU defeated SOU 31-14 for the 2015 title.
