Strip mall fire investigated as possible arson

Fort Wayne firefighters responded to the Wells Outlet General Merchandise Store Saturday morning.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Authorities are investigating a fire that started in a building in Beacon Plaza, a small strip of shops on the city’s northeast side.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded around 8:10 a.m. Saturday after someone reported the fire. Crews arrived and found a small fire inside one of the stores, Wells Outlet (General Merchandise Store). The fire was under control by 8:25 a.m.

As firefighters stooped the flames, Fort Wayne police officers began looking for who started the fire. An officer at the scene told NewsChannel 15 two men were seen running away from the store after the fire started.

An arson investigator also responded to the scene. Police did not say if anyone was taken into custody.
