3 escape duplex fire near downtown

Firefighters responding to a house fire on Edgewood Avenue.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne firefighters are investigating a fire near downtown.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a duplex housing unit at 817 and 819 Edgewater Avenue at 1:49 p.m.

The first arriving firefighters found fire coming from the second story.

Two downstairs occupants and an upstairs occupant were able to make it out safely.

Crews at the scene told NewsChannel 15 the fire was mostly contained at the top floor of the duplex. The second floor unit sustained moderate fire and water damage and heavy smoek damage, according to an FWFD report. Only a small amount of smoke damaged the first floor of the house.

Two cats died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
