FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A 1-year-old girl was killed late afternoon Wednesday after being run over by a vehicle in her south-side driveway.

Police and medics were called just before 4 p.m. to the 300 block of Darrow Avenue on a report of a child struck by a vehicle.

According to Fort Wayne Police spokesman Michael Joyner, the girl’s father had been working on a Toyota Camry in the driveway of his home. The man then got into the car and began to back it out of the driveway when he struck his young daughter, Joyner said.

Medics rushed the girl to a local hospital in critical condition but died there just before 5 p.m.

Joyner called the incident “a tragic accident.” He added that the family member will undergo a standard drug and alcohol screen.
