Vera Bradley Classic raises more than $1 million

The Vera Bradley Classic annually raises in excess of $1 million for breast cancer research.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The 2016 Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer Classic raised $1,052,717. The total was announced at a dinner Monday night after a weekend of events.

The 9-hole golf tournament was played at Fort Wayne Country Club and the 18-hole tournament at Sycamore Hills Golf Club Monday. Women also played in a tennis tournament at Wildwood Racquet Club on Saturday.

The Classic raises money for breast cancer research. Last year $864,000 was raised and the year before that was a record with more than a million dollars raised at the Classic.

The Vera Bradley Foundation supports researchers at the Indiana University Cancer Center in Indianapolis who are working on what’s called monogrammed medicine. They’re working on treatments that are more customized to the woman’s tumor and her own genetics.

NewsChannel 15’s Alyssa Ivanson, Jessica Starbard and Angelica Robinson took part in the 9-hole golf tournament.
