Bicyclist critically injured after being struck by a car dies

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A New York bicyclist who was struck from behind by a passing vehicle late Sunday night in Kosciusko County has died from his injuries.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies and medics were called around 10 p.m. Sunday night to the area of State Road 19 and County Road 600 South on a report of a bicyclist being struck. There, crews found a man down off the east side of the roadway, suffering from multiple injuries.

The bicyclist, 45-year-old Dung Nguyen of Astoria, New York, was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne in critical condition. He passed away on Monday and authorities delayed the official notification of Nguyen’s death in order to notify members of his family. The Allen County Coroner determined Nguyen died from blunt force trauma.

Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. Team members said Nguyen was riding his bicycle northbound on State Road 19 near the intersection of County Road 600 South. A white, 2001 Mercury, driven by Michael D. Julian, 51, Akron, Ohio, was also headed northbound on State Road 19 and approached Nguyen from behind. Julian said he did not see the bicyclist until the very last minute and struck Nguyen.

Investigating deputies said Nguyen had an operational front light on the bicycle, but the rear light was not activated. Investigators said the bike’s rear reflectors were covered and obstructed by objects and baggage that Nguyen had attached to the frame.

The crash currently remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. Team.
