Driver killed in head-on I-469 crash ID’d

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A Fort Wayne driver was killed and two others were hurt in a wrong-way crash on I-469 early Sunday morning.

Emergency dispatchers received a call about the crash at 2:38 a.m. on the overpass at the Maysville Road/S.R. 37 interchange, according to Allen County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Captain Steve Stone.

Stone said a car was heading southbound in the northbound lanes between mile marker 24 and 25. A vehicle going north saw the car and swerved out of the way, but a pickup truck was unable to avoid a collision and struck the wrong-way car head-on.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle – 27-year-old Thijs Kraakman of Fort Wayne – was killed. According to the Allen County Coroner’s Office, Kraackman died of Blunt Force Trauma due to the Motor Vehicle Crash and his death was ruled the county’s 15th traffic death of the year.

A passenger was airlifted by air ambulance to a hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the truck was also hospitalized in serious condition.

Stone said officers are investigating why the driver was heading the wrong way. Toxicology results are pending.

No other information was made available.

Officers directed northbound traffic to the exit ramp as they investigated the crash. The interstate was closed for approximately 4.5 hours Sunday.
